Relegation threat over SYRFC

Two tries scored in the second-half, including one in the last play of the match, were chalked off by the referee in what appeared to be unduly harsh calls by the official who deemed the players held up over the line.

As a result Stornoway lost by three points and while they did pick up a bonus losing point their North Division Two status is hanging on a shoogily nail.

Now they must rely on their relegation rivals results elsewhere in their games in hand going their way but at this stage a last minute reprieve looks unlikely.

Stornoway have both feet firmly planted on the trapdoor out of the league and they face an anxious wait, which could go on until May 21, before the know their own fate when Lochaber will wrap up their own league fixtures.

The match had started so promisingly for Stornoway who shrugged the stresses of a long journey north out of their limbs to roar into a commanding position at the break.

Paul Afrin, John ‘GG’ Campbell and Euan ‘Moley’ Macleod all crossed the line impressively to score tries and roar into a 19-12 lead as the two sides went in at the interval for their half-time refuelling.
