Following the success of last year’s event the community of Uig have confimed plans to celebrate the life of Linda Norgrove by holding the second annual 10k event around the Valtos Peninsula.
The second annual Linda Norgrove Valtos Peninsula 10k will take place on Saturday, October 6 at 12pm starting from Reef machair. Race organisers Tony and Kirsty Wade said: “We were very keen to have an event in Uig as last year the event had such a good turnout - despite the rain. The Valtos Peninsula provides the perfect backdrop for the event and it’s a route that can be run or walked with all the family.”
Similar to the Womens Cancer Challenge 5K, it will be possible to walk, walk and run or just walk the course depending on your fitness levels. “It’s by no means the flattest part of Lewis but it is certainly one of the most scenic,” added Tony.
October 6 has been chosen for the event as it marks the weekend of the anniversary of Linda’s tragic death in a failed rescue attempt following her kidnap in Afghanistan on October 8, 2010. Since then Linda’s focus on humanitarian aid work has been continued by the Foundation set up in her name. Since it was established the charity has awarded over 20 small grants to health and education projects in Afghanistan that support women and children affected by the war there.
“We recognise that not everyone who would like to take part will be able to make it back to Lewis on the day,” said Kirsty.
“Like last year we would like to emphasise the worldwide impact that Linda made during her life by offering a ‘Long Distance Entry’.”
Lorna Norgrove added: “Over 160 people took part in the event both here and right round the world last year, from north America to Everest base camp and to Peru, people showed their commitment to the cause, which was great to see and we already have interest from people who are going to take part in Kabul this year.”
You can now register online from anywhere in the world and we can post a race t-shirt to each entrant if they wish. The idea is that people can run or walk 6.2 miles (10k) on the day and send a picture of themselves wearing the t-shirt, the photos could then be posted on the Facebook page. In this way, many people who knew Linda or would like to take part in the event will be able to feel part of the event here’.
Entry costs £10 and t-shirts will be available shortly at £10. ‘Long Distance Entry’ is £20 including t-shirt and UK postage.
