Shinty festive friendly

The traditional Iomain Challainn shinty match was held on Saturday at Bayhead. Whilst this re-enactment of the ancient Gaelic tradition of playing shinty at New Year is an important event in itself, it was also a useful exercise for Camanachd Leòdhais manager, Iain ‘Diablo’ Sinclair, to take a look at his squad before preseason friendlies begin in February.

It was a bitterly cold and damp day but the spirits certainly weren’t dampened and both sets of players divided by the custom of the old Stornoway Camanachd club, being chosen by the Captain and Vice Captain. This year veteran Duncan MacIntyre has been awarded the captaincy, and Paul Duke has taken the vice-captaincy and both selected strong sides. However, whether it was captain’s prerogative or not, Mr Macintyre ended up with joint players of the year, Will Church and Daniel ‘Gaga’ Gallagher on his team.

It was quite apt that with MacIntyre being a Celtic fan and Duke following Hearts that their combines wore green and dark red respectively and both teams set to work looking to secure bragging rights.
