Shinty - Glengarry defeat Camanachd Leòdhais

With the sun shining on Shawbost, Lewis manager Duncan MacIntyre started his third different goalkeeper of the season.

It was Stuart ‘Tyson’ Campbell deputising between the posts this week and he was called into action almost immediately as an effort from distance stung the veteran’s hand before being cleared.

It was Lewis next on the attack as Peter Gomez shot wide and before long the home side had the lead with a goal of real quality.

Seumas Charity dummied a long shy from Al Reed and a well-timed run saw Will Church through on goal before he rounded the keeper and notched his first of the season.

The Lewis players had their tails up and were threatening a second when some sharpshooting from Glengarry’s Raymond Robertson levelled the scores and halted Lewis’ momentum.

Campbell made a couple of impressive saves in the aftermath but it was Lewis that almost took the lead in the dying embers of the first half from a corner.

The ball fell kindly for Church inside the ‘D’ but his shot trickled wide.

Glengarry came out with a renewed sense of purpose in the second half, coming out on top in most 50/50 tussles, working hard to create space up front and defending with real vigour.

Their strong play was rewarded as a slickly executed counter attack saw Ben Armitage lift the ball into the roof of the net despite the best efforts of Michael MacLeod.

Glengarry were able to keep control of the play for the remainder of the game and Robertson capped off a top performance as he completed his hat trick with two late goals, using the time and space afforded to him to punish the hosts.

There was better news on the youth front as Lewis sent an under-14 team to the mainland for a second week running to take part in the Ross-shire sixes.

The enthusiastic squad of seven that travelled to Strathpeffer consisted of Robert Kearney, Andrew MacDonald, Dylan Pryer, Morgan MacSween, Lisa Mason, Calum Ross and Keith Bray.

The juniors gained invaluable experience against some tough competition and improved as the day went on.
