No football teams from the Western Isles will travel to the NatWest Island Games in Bermuda next year but the islands will be represented by Athletics, Swimming and Cycling teams.
The WIIGA Executive Committee met recently to discuss which teams will be representing the Association at the NatWest Island Games – Bermuda 2013.
All Team Managers have been informed that Athletics, Swimming and Cycling are being asked to send teams to the games. All other teams, which include men’s and women’s football, shooting, golf and sailing, will continue to develop their squads in the build up to Jersey 2015.
Taking a team to Bermuda was always going to be challenging both financially and logistically and this selection has been made to allow WIIGA to make travelling to the Games as affordable as possible to all participants. Team managers were selected up until Jersey 2015 and those teams not going to Bermuda will now plan their development towards Jersey, which will include attending more affordable tournaments in the UK and/or Europe next year.
General Team Manager Iain GG Campbell said: “The NatWest Island Games provides a high level platform for our elite sports people to aspire to. Standards are very high and the International nature of the event adds another dimension to the competition. It is important that we support Bermuda as the host island on this occasion, and maintain our participation in the event.
“Managers of teams not participating in Bermuda have accepted the decision of the committee and are already planning the development of their squads next summer in preparation for Jersey 2015.”
