The Clansman makes it a hat-trick of trophies for Bridge enthusiasts

This week the Bridge Club played for the Clansman Trophy and the second of the 7 Esso competitions.

The holders of the Clansman were Rita MacDonald and Janet Smith, but unfortunately for them they were not to repeat their success again this year and were beaten into second place by the ‘pair in form’.

Once again, Jean MacLeod and Derek MacKenzie proved that they are definitely playing some of their finest Bridge.

Despite some unconventional hands they still managed to obtain an extremely decent score and fully deserved to take the Clansman Trophy.

A hat-trick so far and it’s still early in the Season. In third place were Ken MacDonald and Murdo Kennedy and missing out on third place by a mere 1% were Irene MacKenzie and Gerda Graauwmans (who were paired up in preparation for the Aviemore Congress).

Mention must also be made of Bryan Harris and Colin Scott who came in a magnificent fifth place this week.

Mike Norman and Alex Blair once again boldly bid where no one had bid before and made three small Slams and well done to Ken MacDonald and Murdo Kennedy for bidding and making a Grand Slam on Board 21.

It was probably this hand that allowed them to sneak into 3rd place over Gerda and Irene.

Sue Blair and Iris Stewart had an interesting evening bouncing between tops and bottoms but they had a great result on Board 17, defeating a N/S 4Sx contract by 5 tricks. All the others were in 3NT + 2 so that was an outright top for them.

Finally, congratulations to Ken and Rita MacDonald who competed in the Peebles Congress at the weekend and came in first in the Consolation Finals – a great result.
