Try-A-Tri hailed huge success

More than 200 pairs of legs, 100 swimming costumes or trunks and a 100 pushbikes turned the Lewis Sports Centre into a hub of triathlon fun this week for the first ever Try-A-Tri event.

Organised by triathlete, and Western Isles Island Games Association triathlon and cycling team manager, Christina Mackenzie, a whopping 100 competitors dipped their toe into a taster triathlon for the first time.

Youngsters from as young as eight-years-old joined older children, teenagers and adults in the event which was split into a number of age groups and sections.

Breaking the tape in the adult race with an excellent time of just over 38 minutes as Norman Ferguson.

Norma Macleod was first woman over the line after completing the super sprint challenge of a 400m swim, (16 lengths) 10k cycle, (5km out and back to the Briaghe car park) 2.5km run (6.25 laps of the track).

The kids distances were:

Age 8: 50metre swim/800m cycle/600m run.

Age 9-10: 150m swim/ 2000m cycle/1200m run.

Age 11-12: 200m swim/4000m cycle/1800km run.

Age 13-14: 300m swim/6000m cycle/2400m run.

Speaking after the event Christina admitted she was thrilled with the turnout which she hopes can spark the birth of a first-ever triathlon club on the isles.

“On the success of this event and interest gauged I will be setting up a Western Isles Triathlon in conjunction with Triathlon Scotland and plan to run three events next year,” she said.
