WIIGA 5K draws huge crowd

Stornoway Running and Athletics Club's flying Frenchman Florent Schall was first runner to break the tape in the Western Isles Island Games Association (WIIGA) 5K.

Schall continued his blistering race pace since moving to the isles for his studies with an impressive run of 17:14 which took him home just before WIIGA runners Michael Macmillan and Murdo Alex Mackenzie.

Joanna Gillies was first female runner across the line with her own speedy result of 22:15.

The annual fundraising 5K was organised in association with sponsors Scottish Salmon and Galson Motors and in partnership with Car Hire Hebrides, in the Castle Grounds Stornoway.

140 took off to the sound of councillor Charlie Nicolson’s signal with a number of walkers joining the eager runners who snaked around the Lews Castle Grounds to help raise funds to help our local talented athletes to attend the elite level competitions that the Island Games offers.

Cllr Charlie Nicolson and WIIGA Chairperson Norrie ‘Tompsh’ Macdonald presented the prizes for the first male and female runners to cross the line.
