WIIGA appeal for Island Games sports team managers

The newly appointed Executive of the Western Isles Island Games Association (WIIGA) is wishing to appoint Team Managers to select and prepare athletes for the 2015 NatWest Island Games in Jersey.

The Games will held from June 27, to July 3, 2015 and will include 14 sports: archery; athletics; badminton; basketball; cycling; football (men’s and women’s); golf; sailing and windsurfing; shooting; swimming; table tennis; tennis; triathlon and volleyball.

This will be the second time that Jersey has hosted the Games. The Jersey organisers have well developed plans in place for the Games and have sports co-ordinators appointed to help support Islands to prepare for 2015.

In order to ensure maximum participation in Jersey, WIIGA wish to seek nominations for sports team managers to select and train athletes to the standard required for this international competition.  Sports team managers will be required to agree the desired standards expected of our athletes and prepare a coaching plan to be implemented prior to a final selection deadline in spring 2015.  Managers are already in place for athletics, cycling, football (men’s and women’s), golf, sailing and windsurfing and triathlon, but will consider interest for the Team Manager posts for the remaining sports.
Norman Macdonald, Chairperson of WIIGA explained:  “WIIGA wish to build on the success of previous Games and integral to achieving this is having the right managers appointed to select and develop our talented sports people.  We are looking for experienced people who understand the challenges of training and selecting competitors for an international competition.

“This will be our sixth Games and building on our previous experiences we know that it is important to have managers in place as soon as possible. The intention is to have as many competitors as possible travelling to Jersey, although the final decision on who goes will be decided by the Nomination forms and further information can be downloaded from the WIIGA website (www.wiiga.co.uk) or accessible by email from karen.pickard@cne-siar.gov.uk.” The closing date for nominations is the 20th March 2014.
