WIIGA team cyclist switched from two wheels to four

Swapping the two-wheels he will be competing in this summer’s NatWest Island Games for four wheels was WIIGA Cycling team member John Neil Mitchell who was in action for the third round of the British Beach Series at Weston-Super-mare.

Riding his rebuilt quad Mitchell was in sparkling form competing in four races in which he earned four podium places with a 2nd, 1st, 3rd and a 2nd.

Equally comfortable and impressive on two wheels or four it seems if it’s got wheels then Mitchell can race it and can win with it.

Mitchell said: “I tried my hardest and the most enjoyable race I’ve had in years was the one I won, when we were swapping position all race with both of us (overall winner Carl Bunce) getting held up by back markers and I just managed to cross the line 0.12sec ahead.

“I knew it was close but wasn’t certain I got it as I hit a bad kicker bump and I’m sure I went through the flag sideways still on full gas!

“I’m over the moon with my ‘07 race bike as it ran and handled flawlessly every race, which is testament to the original builders Martin Fletcher/Ian Malpas plus Jamie Black of JB racing for looking after my Elka shocks.

“The bike works even better the rougher the tracks get.

“I got a puncture in the third race, where we were using a different track for the second day and Oli Sansom rode well to second place.

“In the last race I got the holeshot but was soon passed by Carl and hung on but small mistakes and getting caught up in back markers meant the gap got bigger and I couldn’t make it up. All in all a superb weekend and I can’t wait for the next beach race in July - once I strip/rebuild the bike and weld up the cracked swing arm again.”
