Thought of the Week

Humbling

Spending time with someone who knows that they are close to death is not only a humbling experience, it is also a real privilege. Over the past several weeks I have spent time with people who have found themselves in this situation. Whether they have been in hospital or hospice, or even at home, my wish is always that they should not be alone if it can be helped. The wonderful staff at our hospital and hospices care deeply for our loved ones and ensure that all their needs are met with dignity and with gentleness. Being witness to this type of loving care brings great comfort to family and friends who can sometimes feel lost when nearest and dearest are close to dying.Knowing that a friend or relative who is seriously ill, is being looked after with so much expertise and attention allows us to prepare for what could be an uncertain future for some and certainly life-changing for many and this is where my Pastoral Ministry is important. And it’s important to all people, those of faith and those of no faith, there is no distinction in my opinion. Bereavement brings out raw emotion that is rarely seen in any other situations and it is essential that each event is approached differently. I offer an ear, I offer prayer, I offer support where I can, but most of all I offer myself with all the weaknesses and failings I carry with me. If I can, I will wait, pray and support you should you ever need me.

Blessings always Reverend Terry Taggart
