Locals and regulars received the shock news that the Crown Hotel in Stornoway was to close with immediate effect.

The town centre institution has long been a mainstay of the hospitality scene for decades and achieved national publicity in 1964 when the then 14-year-old King Charles gave his minders the slip to partake of a Cherry Brandy in the lounge bar.

In a social media post by the management last Friday, they expressed their regret at having to take the decision to close and their gratitude to customers.

Its owners, a major brewing chain, had advertised for new tenants back in March

“We are sorry to let you know that The Crown has now closed for business,” said the management team. “At this time we don't know when we will be able to reopen.

“We sincerely apologise for any disappointment or inconvenience this causes.

"We want to say a huge thank you to every single one of you for your custom and kindness. It's been a privilege serving you.”

They added: “We'll update you here should anything change. Thank you.”

The Crown, along with several other establishments in the town, is owned by Star Pubs, a branch of Dutch brewing giant Heineken.

The lease of the hotel has been advertised on their website for the last few months.

A spokesperson from Star Pubs told the Gazette that they were still searching for a new operator to take on the business.

“We are looking to reopen The Crown Hotel in Stornoway as quickly as possible and are in the process of recruiting for a new operator to run it,” they said.

Giving its prominent location in the town centre, next to the harbour, it should prove an attractive prospect for those in the industry, with an annual turnover of £1.1million.

“With 15 bedrooms, a popular bar, restaurant, lounge and sports bar, The Crown Hotel is a tourist hub in a prime location on Stornoway high street, within walking distance from the ferry terminal and Lews Castle,” the owners said.
