To celebrate Book Week Scotland last year, Western Isles Libraries decided to hold a special 50-word writing competition for children.

With restrictions on events, the library service had to rethink how to celebrate Book Week Scotland.

Not being able to support face-to-face book club gatherings, hold author’s talks or readings to an audience, they decided to ask children to write their own stories instead.

The theme of the competition was “What makes you happy?” and pupils from a number of primary schools across the island entered the competition, choosing to write in English or Gaelic.

A spokesman told the Gazette: “Three pupils from teacher Dolina MacLeod’s class at Sgoil an Rubha delighted us with their fiction about a mysterious transformation, super boots and a nasty snake bite. Three other pupils from teachers Angus Morrison and Yolande MacDonald at Stornoway Primary School greatly amused us with their fiction about fishing, gaming and dancing.

Kathleen Milne, Library & Information Service Manager, said: “Congratulations to our winners Ruairidh, Iona, Zach, Jenna, Daniel and Kaitlyn for their amazing mini fictions! Each story, whether in English or Gaelic, had a little something special and they should be proud to have taken up the challenge of writing stories.”

Each child received a certificate as well as a £10 book token. You can find their 50-word stories and accompanying drawings on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram at @WILibraries. You can watch a short video of the stories here: https://youtu.be/cWIlRmb19u4
